If I should have a daughter,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>instead of “Mom,”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>she’s going to call me “Point B,”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>because that way she knows that no matter what happens,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>at least she can always find her way to me.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

And I’m going to paint solar systems on the backs of her hands<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>so she has to learn the entire universe<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>before she can say, “Oh, I know that like the back of my hand.”<\/span><\/div>\n

And she’s going to learn<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>that this life will hit you hard in the face,<\/span><\/span>wait for you to get back up just so it can kick you in the stomach.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>But getting the wind knocked out of you<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>is the only way to remind your lungs<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>how much they like the taste of air.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>There is hurt, here,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>that cannot be fixed by Band-Aids or poetry.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

So the first time she realizes that Wonder Woman isn’t coming,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>I’ll make sure she knows<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>she doesn’t have to wear the cape all by herself,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>because no matter how wide you stretch your fingers,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>your hands will always be too small<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>to catch all the pain you want to heal.\u00a0<\/span>Believe me, I’ve tried.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

“And, baby,” I’ll tell her,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>don’t keep your nose up in the air like that.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>I know that trick; I’ve done it a million times.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>You’re just smelling for smoke<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>so you can follow the trail back to a burning house,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>so you can find the boy who lost everything in the fire<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>to see if you can save him.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Or else find the boy who lit the fire in the first place,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>to see if you can change him.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

But I know she will anyway,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>so instead I’ll always keep an extra supply<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>of chocolate and rain boots nearby,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>because there is no heartbreak that chocolate can’t fix.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Okay, there’s a few that chocolate can’t fix.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>But that’s what the rain boots are for,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>because rain will wash away everything, if you let it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

I want her to look at the world<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>through the underside of a glass-bottom boat,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>to look through a microscope<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>at the galaxies that exist<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>on the pinpoint of a human mind,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>because that’s the way my mom taught me.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>That there’ll be days like this.\u00a0<\/span>There’ll be days like this<\/i>, my momma said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

When you open your hands to catch<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and wind up with only blisters and bruises;<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>when you step out of the phone booth and try to fly<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and the very people you want to save<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>are the ones standing on your cape;<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>when your boots will fill with rain,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and you’ll be up to your knees in disappointment.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

And those are the very days you have all the more reason to say thank you.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Because there’s nothing more beautiful<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>than the way the ocean refuses to stop kissing the shoreline,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>no matter how many times it’s sent away.<\/span><\/div>\n

You will put the wind in win some, lose some.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>You will put the star in starting over, and over.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>And no matter how many land mines erupt in a minute,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>be sure your mind lands<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>on the beauty of this funny place called life.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

And yes, on a scale from one to over-trusting,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>I am pretty damn naive.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>But I want her to know that this world is made out of sugar.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>It can crumble so easily,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>but don’t be afraid to stick your tongue out and taste it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

“Baby,” I’ll tell her, “remember, your momma is a worrier,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and your poppa is a warrior,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and you are the girl with small hands and big eyes<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>who never stops asking for more.”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

Remember that good things come in threes<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and so do bad things.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Always apologize when you’ve done something wrong,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>but don’t you ever apologize<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>for the way your eyes refuse to stop shining.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Your voice is small, but don’t ever stop singing.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

And when they finally hand you heartache,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>when they slip war and hatred under your door<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and offer you handouts on street-corners<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>of cynicism and defeat,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>you tell them that they really ought to meet your mother.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
